Southampton Football Cub, on the south coast of England, have been in conflict with local newspaper, the Plymouth Herald. They have restricted access for photographers, demanding instead that media outlets buy officially sanctioned (and costly) images taken by the club.

So the Argyle brought in a strike breaker. Cartoonist Chris Robinson. Who watched this weekend’s match on the television between Southampton and Plymouth Argyle and drew his favourite bits. Which the paper planned to print in its match report.

But at the last minute, Plymouth Argyle fearing a backlash from sponsors, provided their own images, for free, to the paper.

Today`s “Digital Photography Classes” lesson will be Mounting an exhibition. If you have taken some decent digital photography classes, you have probably learned that after spending some time taking photographs and accumulating images, the urge to show your work to people beyond your immediate circle of family and friends may start to grow and gnaw at you. From digital photography classes you will gain the knowledge that the first thing you must do is banish from your mind any doubts that your work is not good enough to show to the wider public. An exhibition is exactly that: you make an exhibit of yourself. People will not laugh, but they may admire. If you have the drive and the ambition, then you should start planning now – you cannot start this process too early.

Turning a dream into reality
If you search the internet, you should be able to find some online digital photography classes, or some digital photography forums full of useful informations about where to find quality digital photography schools, or how to search for quality digital photography tutorials and digital photography guides.

You may feel that you are not ready to mount an exhibition just yet. If so, then perhaps you had better get on with the task of building up a library of suitable images. At some point in the future you will know you have the right material and that the time is right. This is the confidence that you will gain after taking some digital photography classes.

Now try to imagine in your mind’s eye what the show will look like: visualize how you would light it, how you will position your images for maximum impact, how to sequence photographs to create a particular atmosphere, and create a flow of meaning or narrative. Picture to yourself the size of the prints, how they will glow in the light.

This will help to focus your mind and guide your energies as well as act as a spur to your picture- or print-making. Here are some other pointers you might want to consider:

- If you have taken the right digital photography classes, and if you master the right digital photography tips, than you should know how to choose your venue well in advance, as most of the better-known galleries are under a lot of pres¬sure and have to plan their schedules at least a year ahead. Other galleries may call quarterly or half-yearly committee meetings to decide what to show in the proceeding period. At the other end of the scale, venues such as a local library or a neighbourhood community hall may be prepared to show work at very short notice. In any event, you will want to give yourself the time necessary for your plans to mature and to give the venue the opportunity to tie something in to the exhibition, such as a concert or lecture (depending on the subject matter of your imagery).

- If you have succeeded in taking your digital photography degrees, than you should kow that you should choose your venue creatively. Any public space could be a potential exhibition venue – indeed, some seemingly improbable spaces may be more suitable for some types of work than a “proper” gallery. Bear in mind that the very presence of your work will transform the space into a “gallery”, whether it is on the top deck of a bus, a shopping mall, or a pedestrian walkway.

- Digital photography classes also teach you that you should budget with your brains, not your heart. Put on the best show you can afford, not one that costs more than you can afford. The point of an exhibi¬tion is to win a wider audience for your work, not to bankrupt you or to force you to call in financial favours that you might need at some time in the future to further your photographic endeavours.

- Once you have decided on the space you want to use and have received all necessary permissions, produce drawings of the layout of the entire venue. This will also involve you in making little thumbnail sketches of your prints in their correct hanging order: it is easier to visualize the effec¬tiveness of picture order this way. These are the kind of knowledge with which you should remain after taking some really decent digital photography classes.

LONDON.- Rankin blurs the boundaries of fashion, photography and fine art in Painting Pretty Pictures, a collection of painterly studies of feminine beauty. Using digital retouching as a tool for artistic effect, stunning nudes of some of the world’s top models, including Yasmin Le Bon, Heidi Klum, Lindsay Lohan and Lily Cole, are transformed into apparent oil paintings. Painting Pretty Pictures will run through 29th August at Annroy Gallery, Rankin’s own Kentish Town gallery space. Rankin lives in London with his wife Tuuli and his son Lyle.

Always keen to explore the limits of his chosen medium, Rankin reframes the debate surrounding the use of digital image manipulation, creating a new hyperreal aesthetic that merges fantasy and reality. With Gerhard Richter amongst his inspirations, Rankin departs from his trademark style, creating images which seem almost classical through the use of the latest imaging technologies.

Synonymous with dynamic and intimate portraiture, the photographer Rankin has shot everyone from royalty to refugees. His powerful images are part of contemporary iconography, and mix a cross section of his own personal interests with commercial campaigns, from Nike to Women’s Aid. His work is regularly exhibited in galleries around the world from Sao Paolo to Moscow, London to LA.

Rankin first came to prominence when he co-founded style bible Dazed & Confused with Jefferson Hack. One of the most important magazines of the 90’s, it established its stylists in the fashion elite, broke some of today’s top designers and nurtured the budding careers of a generation of creative photographers.

Earning a reputation for creative portraiture and a talent for capturing the character and spirit of his subjects, Rankin quickly became a formidable force in photography, shooting Brit-pop bands including Pulp and Blur and darlings of pop such as Kylie and Madonna. Rankin’s career continued to blossom and covers for German Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Arena and GQ quickly followed.

His body of work includes some of the most influential politicians, popular musicians, revered artists and celebrated models since the early 90’s. However, Rankin also continues to take on projects that feature ordinary people, often questioning established notions of beauty, causing controversy and igniting debates along the way. Most recently he travelled to Johannesburg with the BBC to film South Africa in Pictures, a documentary in which he traced the country’s photographic history.

Between 2004 and April 2010, Rankin has co-directed music videos, commercials and feature films with Chris Cottam. This included their debut film The Lives of Saints, penned by Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas writer Tony Grisoni, which enjoyed success on the festival circuit and won the grand jury prize at the Salento International Film Festival. Rankin now continues to film commercial and personal projects independently.

Painting Pretty Pictures by Rankin is distributed in the UK by Turnaround, Annroy Gallery, details can be found at www.rankin.co.uk.

Flowers add such spirit to the room or an outdoor setting. I have recently started collecting bud vases (some new, some created, some ‘turned-into vases’ from other existing items I already had). I love spreading them throughout the house… spreading this ‘spirit’ and beauty all about!

Awesome nice pictures from Viginia McDonald. She is really a talented photographer and know how to present interior decoration and design in a way of art.
And yes, I also agree with you about what you say about flowers. I do love flowers too and nothing adds more of a touch to a room than some flowers.
I even use dried flowers to decorate my rooms if no fresh flowers are on hand. It doesn’t even always have to be a bouquet of flowers, just one beautiful rose in a decorative vase will catch the eye and add charm to the room.

I’ll let you in on a little secret, you know how most mother’s would love to have a fantastic photographer photograph their children? Well my dream would be to have professional photographs of my home! These photos are beautiful!!!! As far as flowers, I couldn’t agree more, they are a must for me too! We recently moved to a new house and the house was a disaster but I still insisted on buying flowers so there was something that was pretty going on!!

Apple admits to faulty laptop batteries

Apple today issued a statement saying there are some known problems with MacBook and MacBook Pro notebooks in which the battery might have poor performance, but there are no safety concerns. These performance problems include:

laptop  Battery is not recognized causing an “X” to appear in the battery icon in the Finder menu bar
laptop Battery will not charge when computer is plugged into AC power.
laptop Battery exhibits low charge capacity/runtime when using a fully charged battery with a battery cycle count (as shown in System Profiler) of less than 300.
laptop Battery pack is visibly deformed.

Macbook users have been issued with a software update to fix ‘visibly deformed’ battery packs, among other problems

Apple has admitted that some batteries in its Macbook and Macbook Pro line of laptops have ‘performance issues’ and has issued a software update to fix the problem.

Among the symptoms of batteries that are affected are swelling, the battery not being recognised or not charging, and a shorter than expected battery life.

“The factors causing the performance issues do not present a safety risk. You may continue to use your current battery,” the company said.

Reports of problems, including swollen batteries, have been circulating since the laptops were launched in 2006.

In its support notes to users, Apple says battery packs which are “visibly deformed” are among the symptoms of battery problems.

The company advises users to install the update on all “MacBook and MacBook Pro computers and extra batteries that were purchased between February 2006 and April 2007″.

Apple has a support site up and if your battery experiences any of these symptoms you should download the software to try and correct the problem. If the issues with the battery persist, Apple has a replacement program in place. Information on their site will guide you through this.

Despite the problems, Macbook remains a successful range for Apple. The company recently reported that sales of its portable computers rose from 498,000 to 891,000 over the 12 months to March 31, helping boost quarterly profits to $770 million (£386 million).

It must be added to the lineup of Fujitsu Amilo series of two new models designed for those who make intensive use of multimedia applications: the Pi Pi 3560 and HD 3660. Alongside the Amilo Li 3710 and 3910 presented this summer, these two new desktop replacement differ for richer hardware equipment and performance-oriented. Both models are equipped with Intel Core 2 Duo, video card Nvidia GeForce 240M GT with 1GB of dedicated video memory and support for PhysX and CUDA technologies, 320 or 500GB hard drive and up to 8GB of RAM. Wide choice with regard to screen sizes: the Pi 3560 is available with either 15.6-or 16-inch panel (resolution 1366×768 pixels), while the Pi HD 3660 is equipped with a panel of well-18.4-inch diagonal (resolution 1680×945 pixels) .

The vocation of the two new multimedia Amilo is outside both the choice of format display with LED backlight and 16:9 form factor, as the ability to be configured with a Blu-Ray option. Thanks to 'HDMI video output can also connect the notebook with an external high-definition screen and instantly turn them into mediacenter salon.

Complete the endowment of a new Fujitsu laptop WLAN card with support for draft-n protocol, a Gigabit Ethernet LAN, aerial Bluetooth 2.1, the memory card reader 5-in-1 and 1.3 megapixel webcam with microphone. For those in need expandability, the two Amilo also offer an array of interfaces over HDMI-out which includes VGA, eSATA, USB 2.0, ExpressCard, S / PDIF. For those who have the habit of drinking coffee while checking email or surfing the Web, the keyboards of these new notebooks are “splash proof” (up to 50ml of liquid).

The design of these new Amilo Pi 3560 and HD 3660 follows the trend of the last restyling Fujitsu, characterized by an angular profile and tone white / black gloss, while the weight remains on content to respectively and 2.75Kg 3.4Kg. The Fujitsu Amilo Pi 3560 and HD 3660 will be sold soon with Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit), although currently there are no official dates or prices.

The price premium, aside from the normal Fujitsu markup, appears to be due to the larger 6-cell batter (5800mAh vs. 4400mAh). That's almost 30% more battery capacity for the Fujitsu over similar offerings from Acer, who saddles all their AMD products with low capacity batteries.

Thin and light notebooks are very portable by design, and with the Fujitsu LifeBook P3010 for $790.90 you get decent specs too. The AMD Athlon Neo MV 40 CPU is in the same weight class as the Intel Atom CPUs, and ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics card is low end, but for thin and light notebooks they’re typical. More universally normal is the 320GB hard drive, 2GB of RAM, and Windows 7 Home Premium. The screen is small at 11.6in, but the 1366×768 resolution is decent. General computing will be straightforward, but games more intensive then F.E.A.R. at low settings are out of the question.

Even among thin and light notebooks this one is lithe, weighing 1.6kg and measuring 285×209x30.2 mm. If your main reason for buying a notebook is portability, you get a good deal from the Fujitsu LifeBook P3010.

Newcomers to 35mm (SLR and Digital SLR) photography commonly ask why their photos appear to be more grainy than the sleek, crystal clear shots of professionals.

The answer lies within the setting of your ISO speed. Traditionally, ISO refers to film speed. As confusing as it seems, ISO actually stands for International Organization for Standardization. However, according to Thinkcp.com, ISO is not an exact acronym. Thinkcp.com continues to explain, “In fact,”ISO” is a word, derived from the Greek isos, meaning “equal”, which is the root of the prefix “iso-” that occurs in a host of terms, such as “isometric” (of equal measure or dimensions) and “isonomy” (equality of laws,or of people before the law) … From “equal” to “standard”, the line of thinking that led to the choice of “ISO” as the name of the organization is easy to follow.”

Now, as I said before, in a traditional sense, ISO refers to film speed – But what about Digital SLR? It most certainly is known for not using film of any kind, so how does a Digital SLR use ISO if there is no film? The creators of this technology have passed down this concept on a digital level. In essence, you are not controlling the film speed but the light sensitivity of the digital censor – “Virtual film”, if you will. So, from an external point of view, this concept seems to work exactly the same in both forms of photography – Film and digital.

ISO speed is based on a number system typically beginning with 100 and ending with 1600. On the ISO scale, 100 is less sensitive to light, where as 1600 is enhanced to be more sensitive to light – Thus, creating visual distortion in the form of grain. When determining your ISO speed, you must understand that using a lower ISO number will result in improved quality but, as mentioned before, it also lowers the overall amount of light that the camera's sensor records. This means the lower ISO number you choose, you will have to use slower shutter speeds, and/or larger aperture to make up for the loss of light the ISO speed caused and vice versa for higher iso numbers closer to 1600.

Be sure not to confuse grain with noise. This happens more often in video production, but sometimes colors like green are known for causing visual noise when editing in post production due to chroma factors and color sampling levels (compression), which is an entirely different article. All in all, if you have the option to shoot with a lower ISO speed, by all means, do so. Just remember that if you're in low light situations, like an indoor party at night time, it may not be a good idea due to the fact that you'd have to decrease the shutter speed (if your aperture cannot makeup for all of the loss of light), which can result in an unwanted blurry picture!

Finding the right Wedding Photographer

Choosing a wedding photographer depends on a number of different criteria. You need to have a clear idea of what’s involved in choosing a wedding photographer that’s right for you.

Reputation and Experience: these days digital photography has given everyone the power to take good images, but only true professionals with talent and training can provide you with a professional service. A persona recommendation is often a good starting point. You cannot afford a ‘no show’ or a botched job. You only have one chance to get your wedding photography right and you have to be able to trust the photographer.

Someone who will fit in: You need to shop around and meet the wedding photographer. There’s nothing worse than hiring someone whose personality or style does not fit the occasion. Most wedding photographers try to be as unobtrusive as possible and behave like and look like a guest.

Will they take photographs we actually like? Take a look at their work and decide if this is the style for you.

Do they offer a wide range of packages to provide choice to meet our budget? Always key to choosing the right wedding photographer: they have to fit your budget with no hidden costs.

When Should You Book Your Wedding Photographer?

The sooner the better. 9-12 months before is a good rule of thumb. Why so long? Well, like a wedding venue can get fully booked, so can a wedding photographer. Most only work at weekends and there isn’t that many weekends in a year. And while you are at it, make sure you are not being provided with an assistant rather than the main man or woman.

What Are The Different Styles of Wedding Photography On Offer?

These days there is much greater choice than just the traditional wedding photographs.

A wedding as an exercise in photojournalism

This approach turns the wedding experience into a story with a beginning and end and covers a number of styles which can be very individual to the photographer. It will usually employ a number of locations which are pertinent to the bride and groom’s ‘story’.

The style is usually described as ‘candid’ and shot using available light. If any of your family hankers after traditional planned shots of family groups, the ceremony etc. then be very careful about this style.

Traditional wedding photographs:

The complete opposite of the photo journalistic style, this is the one we all know. It means endless poses of the bridge and groom, the best man, the bride’s parents, the groom’s parents, everyone together, cute page boys – you get the idea. Usually a wedding photographer in this style will have done the same prepared set of shots with the same camera positions and lighting, even at the same venues, dozens of times. It isn’t exactly spontaneous or original but it does record the event and people for posterity.

Artistic wedding photography style:

This is another planned and posed style but makes uses location, composition, unusual angles and digital rendering to produce something between candid and traditional. But beware: some artistic photographers can be a little ‘off the wall; – make sure you see several examples of their style before choosing.

What Should I Pay For A Wedding Photographer?

Answering that question is like answering ‘how long is a piece of string?’ You must make a decision based on your overall budget. Decide what percentage of your budget is required for professional wedding photography.

What you must ensure is that you get value for money. This means you have to do a bit of research, ask friends what they paid and look for recommendations.

A typical price range is from 00 to 00. It could be a lot more but not a lot less unless you just want the photographer to show up and leave you to.

To decide what you should pay means you have to understand what you want and the service you require.

Some questions to consider: • Do you just want the negatives/digital files to ‘do it yourself’ or a complete professional service? • Type and style of albums? • The final number of photographs required? • The range of photographs: is it just the wedding ceremony, or will it covers the whole day including reception? • The reputation and previous work of the wedding photographer.

Summing it all up

Like everything else, wedding photography has changed and the digital age has offered many new opportunities. Make sure you plan ahead and make the choices you and the families involved will be comfortable with. You only get one chance to create a wedding album which you will cherish for a lifetime.
