Not long ago, I received a notice in connection with the 14-day belly fat study sponsored by the curves and Health & Wellness Center in Alexandria, Virginia. I was curious to sample the services and facilities of the curves, so that answered the ad. Also, a study belly fat sounds like an excellent addition to my medical advise rheumatologist.During routine visit in September, my rheumatologist asked that my exercise level and food choices. My initial reaction was one of the blame for an increasingly sedentary. However, my rheumatologist very smart to change the focus of conversation. She explained that adipose tissue (fat) produce specific proteins or cytokines (TNF-a and interleukin-1) involved in systemic inflammation (as associated with rheumatoid arthritis). Some of the newer drugs for RA, including Enbrel, Humira and Remicade, work to counteract interleukins and TNF-a. However, Member States are limited to patients using these drugs because of MS-like neurological side effects. Thus, non-pharmaceutical, prescription anti-inflammatory to reduce the production of these cytokines is to focus on reducing belly fat through exercise and nutrition. This puts me, the patient responsible for the use of alternative and natural methods to control symptoms and dangerous consequences of chronic disease. I would say I'm lucky in that several of my doctors welcome an integrative medicine approach to disease management, but my health insurance does not. For example, no insurance coverage access to licensed dieticians and physiotherapists, although their guidance and experience will be invaluable in helping to limit the effects of chronic diseases. Sorry, you must be a diabetic dietician to services covered by insurance and only approved for the treatment of obesity is the final solution of gastric bypass surgery.The-patient, CEO of personal health and WellnessIn ideal patient in the center of the health system to separate (IE. patient, user, customer, executive director of his own body, whatever you prefer to be called) should seek to obtain the most accurate and appropriate information with which to take decisions on their decisions in order to achieve a healthy body or treat a specific disease or disorder. Although the CEO of a corporation is not required to obtain education or degree in electrical engineering to run a company that uses computers, modern lighting, or technology, copier, it would be wise to benefit from the experience of those who have the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain the desired electrical and technical systems necessary to facilitate the functions of the corporation. Similarly, a patient must have medical training to be wise enough to seek the cooperation and assistance of qualified, trained and licensed medical or health professional. License against CertificationIn general, a license is issued by a government permit allows the recipient of the privilege to do business or engage in activity that is otherwise prohibited. A licensing board shall determine the conditions and restrictions that must be met to enable participation in certain professions or activities. Certification differs from licensing, as it is issued as an authorization to participate in certain activities. Certification serves to set standards, educate physicians and increase the competence to examine the implementation of specific training. The difference between license and certification can be significant when patient-CEO seeks advice from a qualified healthcare. For example, consider the difference between a dietician and nutritionist. Nutritionist against NutritionistDietitians have Bachelor's degree specializing in food and nutrition, and have completed an accredited internship in a hospital or a graduate degree related to an approved hospital. They must pass a national examination for registration and maintain their registration through continuing education. As dietitians are members of a regulated profession, they are held accountable for their behavior and care they provide. The term "food" is not regulated vocational plan and not a minimum qualification for an individual to call only one dietician. Some nutritionists can give your business fancy names like "National Nutrition Clinic or International Nutrition Center, but the truth is anyone can open a store as" food "- including the annual 16th child in a store health food. What is Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)? According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), part of the National Institutes of Health, CAM is a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices and products that are not currently considered part of conventional medicine. Conventional medicine is medicine as practiced by holders of MD (doctor) or not (Doctor of osteopathy) degrees and their allied health professionals such as physical therapists, psychologists, and registered nurses. Some health care providers practice CAM, and conventional medicine. While some scientific evidence exists regarding some CAM therapies, for most there are key issues that still need to be answered through well-designed scientific studies – questions such as whether these therapies are safe and whether they work for diseases or diseases they are used. The list of what is considered to be CAM changes continually, as those drugs that are proven to be safe and effective become adopted into conventional health care and new approaches to health care emerge. Complementary medicine is used in combination with conventional medicines. Example of complementary therapy use aromatherapy to help reduce patient discomfort after surgery. Alternative medicine is used in place of conventional medicine. An example of an alternative therapy is using a special diet to treat cancer instead of undergoing surgery, radiation or chemotherapy, which was recommended by a conventional doctor. Integrative medicine combines treatments from conventional medicine and CAM, which has some high quality evidence of safety and effectiveness. Integrative medicine neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts alternative therapies uncritically. As part of the Department of Medicine at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson, Program in Integrative Medicine seeks to "lead the transformation of healthcare by creating, training and active support of a community of professionals who embody the philosophy and practice of integrative medicine. "Along with the concept of treatment, the broader concept of health promotion and disease prevention are of paramount importance. Currently, there is no accreditation agency with authority to approve a comprehensive education in integrative medicine.Although, Integrative medicine is not without its critics, I would like to suggest that much research is being done, which explains, or at least support the beneficiary claims some alternative approaches, including nutrition, acupuncture, deep tissue release, etc.. Book that I have found to be both highly educated and less practicable "prescription for nutritional healing" by Phillis A Balch, CNC and James F. Balch, PhD. NCCAM research to confirm many of the nutritional claims in this book is now in it's fourth edition.Back curves / Health & Wellness Center StudyWhen replied to the ad, the woman on the phone told me that it is necessary to attend a seminar on Monday The night before the start of the study. Since I teach lessons every weeknight, could not attend but the meeting was scheduled to see a doctor instead. I was told that the doctor would like to conduct due diligence analysis, it seems reasonable to me.At health & wellness center, a video of a lecture plays in the waiting room. I found that a bit annoying while trying to focus on submitting all documents mentioned and then read a handout of the recommended dietary guidelines. During the meeting, Assistant measured weight and height (I was asked to remove shoes) requested urine sample in a non-sterile container (not an instruction or disinfectant wipes provided for "clean catch" sample), took my blood pressure while down and then while standing (not past time to allow hand to recover between pressure readings), and finally beat variation test, while down and then standing up (I was told that recorded the heart's ability I respond to stress). While waiting for the doctor, I continued to read literature conditions and make note of the posters and notices placed on the walls. A large poster illustrates the acupuncture points used in traditional Chinese medicine. [I have a friend who is an acupuncturist and her treatment helped me to cope with significant pain and stiffness.] However, no diplomas or certificates were placed prominently in office. One Dr. Berg of the first things the doctor discussed only after the introduction of urine, which indicates the level of pH 7.0 and elevated leukocyte levels. I was told that I am completely neutral pH, which must be considered and that the raised level of leukocytes indicate possible urinary tract infections. The first thing I asked was "what is a normal level of pH ordinary man and then what is the pH normal level for someone who is on drugs to do?" It is at this point that the doctor looked at my forms and replied: "Oh, you're like many medicines. What are these for? "Red flag began to rise.I relate to the form where I carefully listed all diseases including multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. I also said cheerfully that, yes, I double-dipped in autoimmune sweat. Then the doctor showed me a graph illustrating test results of heart rate variability. Obviously, my heart did not show optimal strength and durability. The doctor explained it was like "I had one foot on the accelerator and one foot on the brake pedal." The doctor further explained that probably had problems with my adrenals and thyroid. He encouraged me to participate in the next seminar, which was offered on Saturday morning to get the full amount of information you will need to complete the study. I agreed to attend. But I'll tell you now that if the ad stated the seminar, I would not have responded. Thanks to recent attempts to unrelated seminars (1,2), I became very suspicious of such victims. The SeminarAt of the seminar, Dr. Eric E. Berg discusses the impact of hormones on the storage of body fat, as discussed in his recently published book, "7 Principles for fat burning." To accompany the book Dr. Berg has provided an online software program called "Fat Burning Tracker", which aims to track the hormonal effects of certain foods and activities. He was in a seminar that I first learned about Dr. Berg is a Chiropractor, a small detail that was glossed over so point.During demonstration part of the seminar, Dr. Berg illustrates a system of muscle-testing different parts of the body to find energy blockages, helping to determine weaknesses in the coordination of the endocrine system. After further research, I have certain techniques Dr. Berg as Contact Reflex Analysis (CRA) analysis system using the reflex points on the body and muscle testing, which seems to be rooted in the theories of Applied Kinesiology. CRA is not widely accepted in conventional medicine, as is evident in this article by Stephen Barrett, MD – "Contact Reflex Analysis is nonsense." Also during the seminar, I browse the "seven principles" book and noted that much of the material appears to have been taken from Guyton / Hall – Textbook of Medical Physiology and Faigin – "natural hormonal enhancement. To promote and ensure the success of this book, Dr. Berg Gilleard employed the services of market research. I must admit that "Fat Burning the place is very chic and represents an interesting approach to consumer education on the interaction of diet, hormones and health. The health and wellness center and BRT (body recovery technique) and Health Center Beauty is owned and operated by Dr. Eric Berg, DC He graduated Doctor of Chiropractic from Virginia and California Boards of Medicine. The suspicion is that the health & wellness center is a unique equipment for preparing clients to participate in the purification steps. [I do not know if this happens. No mention of sauna therapy were presented during the seminar.] Concern in November 2005 on possible links between health & wellness center and a Scientology mission in Alexandria, VAPersonal Take-AwaysFirst of all, I do not wish to engage in discussion regarding the teachings of Scientology or techniques or practices and training techniques Chiropractors. Finally, I hope that all readers can agree that our food choices and exercise on health and well being. However, if medical professionals and health insurance companies continue to avoid involvement with scientific medicine integration best treatment options is reasonable to think that more patient-executive directors will unconsciously seek leadership of self-proclaimed "experts" on any number of subjects and treatment guidelines modalities.Regarding food belly fat study, I have actively decided not to make drastic changes in my diet (such as drinking cranberry juice / lemon juice / apple cider vinegar dish), which may or may not place an unnecessary burden on my liver.

Oh, dear. New Agers tend to be very sensitive to criticism. They claim it's because they are so attuned to positive energy, and this has made them especially compassionate, non-judgmental, kind, and filled with peaceful benevolence.

Well, maybe so, but it could also be because they spout a lot of pseudoscientific crap which doesn't stand up under any sort of analysis, all the while insisting that believing in — or accepting — such crap marks them as especially compassionate, non-judgmental, kind, and filled with peaceful benevolence. Unlike their critics, who are THE OPPOSITE!!!11111!!11!

A new age friend of mine once asked why anyone cares about whether or not their science is rigorous, or not. Our very anger and outrage clearly points to uncertainty and fear: we must know they're right, and are upset because we can't do anything about it. I told her no; it was more like being an expert on Native American culture, and watching some people go around declaring that Walt Disney's Peter Pan was accurate. Indians say “how.” And “ugh.”

It's not just the sense of accuracy that is outraged. There's a moral component to watching something beautiful being violated. Dawkins once called Young Earth Creationism “educational debauchery.” You can add the “energy vibration” people into the same classroom.
