Mastering Emotions: Taking Your Life To The Next Level

Hello,

How is your day coming along? Better, I am sure, than that particular day the crew of the Apollo 13 had as they were on their way home to planet earth.

The return flight of Apollo 13 will forever be one of the most momentous flights ever recorded in history. And what most people remember most vividly is the single remark: “Houston, we have a problem.”

Now, life, and daily living in general, is a process, and an ongoing series of opportunities. Some of these opportunities are pure delight and pleasure and some are of a nature that calls for a different type of flexibility, resilience and persistence. The Apollo 13 crew faced a challenge that threatened their very physical existence on a level that would have defeated most human beings, because most human beings have never learned to master their emotions. What they have learned, instead, is to be led by their emotions, which is another way of saying being mastered by their emotions.

If there is anything that illustrates the importance of mastering emotions, the return trip of Apollo 13 does that. Because, far more important than the million upon millions of dollars that were at stake, human lives were at stake. The Apollo Crew brought themselves home safely, with the help of the Houston team, because they kept their heads, focused their minds on conscious and unconscious levels and thought and acted effectively.

And you might be thinking, “What does this have to do with me?” I am not an astronaut, and never will be.

I’ll come back to that! Switching gears, I am wondering if you watched the first series of “The Apprentice”? If so, you know who Bill Rancic is. He is the one (out of 216,000 applicants) who became Trump’s assistant, against all odds. I heard Bill speak recently and he described the experiences and challenges they were put through, including enduring 12 weeks sleeping only 1-2 hours a night, literally pushing them to the edge physically, mentally and emotionally. Perhaps that partially explained Omarosa! As for Bill Rancic, he demonstrated his ability to master his emotions rather than having his emotions master him, as most all of the other candidates did.

Again, you might be thinking, “What does this have to do with me?” I’m not going on “The Apprentice.” Fair enough.

Yet every day, people you know, including yourself, encounter situations that call for mastering emotions, for emotional wisdom.

You might be a mom or dad-who in the past while in a store with your child, looked up and… your child was nowhere to be seen! What was your reaction? Now you understand the value of “mastering emotions!” And what about the college student going in for the final exam that is pivotal to her future? Or consider a recent experience of my oldest daughter, Dana, who graduates from the Loyola University/ Chicago this June. She recently worked all weekend on an important paper, only to lose it when her computer crashed. She had to write the paper again, having only a couple of hours to rewrite it. And that is exactly what she was able to do, because long ago she had developed the beliefs and skill sets involved in creating useful emotional and mental states required for such situations. And good that she had such ability, because in the beginning of her program, her class was told that within a year, only about half of them would still be nursing students. The rest would be driven out by the rigors of the program. In short, they were told that the ones washing out would not be able to handle the “stress factor.”

What about the person being called into the boss’s office, after many rounds of “downsizing?” Or the emergency room physician being confronted with the worst case she has ever seen, and more than that, has never before handled…knowing that a life is in her hands? Or the spouse who has just been informed by their partner that he or she no longer wants to remain in the marriage. And what about someone in your office that you would not wish on anyone else? Someone who does what they can on a regular basis to try to “push your buttons?”

The fact is, that on an ongoing basis, we are called upon to respond to situations, people and circumstances that call for emotional resilience, flexibility, focus, creativity, and the ability to keep our heads, so to speak.

Fortunately, every human being has an incredible opportunity to learn the skill sets, the beliefs, the values, and the behaviors that are involved in the matter of “Mastering Emotions.” And with the phrase “mastering emotions,” I am referring to mastering your own emotions and the emotional states and behaviors of others around you. Others, for the most part, have never learned how to effectively create what I call “useful states” for themselves. I will go so far as to say that most human beings have been taught precious little about mastering emotions…about how they can understand and resourcefully respond to their own emotions…and to the emotions of their significant other, their children, their extended family members, their friends, their colleagues, their bosses, managers or employees!

Normal And…Unhealthy

Most people that I talk to and interact with have very little comprehension of the fact that they are creating their own emotional states on an ongoing basis. By that I mean, most human beings believe that what creates their emotional states is the particular circumstance that they are facing, what someone has said to them, or what some individual did or did not do as they interacted with them. Going further, most people would say that it is “normal” to respond to “challenging circumstances” with anxiety, doubt, anger, and even with some degree of “helplessness.” Well, I say, “screw normal.” Because what I have found are ways to respond effectively and resourcefully to what many say cannot be responded to resourcefully and effectively! And how did I do that? Simply by observing the fact that others have learned to do so, and by asking someone who had mastered what I wanted to learn to teach and coach me how to do just that!

After all, I had learned how to respond in a less than resourceful way to many circumstances of life. And then I learned that all behavior is learned behavior. So, why shouldn’t I learn how to master emotions? And that is just what I decided to do five years ago. That decision, and all that followed, was one of the wisest decisions I had ever made in my life. Period.

Now, I believe that if we cannot own our own emotions and take full responsibility for the emotions that we create for ourselves, it will be quite difficult, if not impossible, for us to create the life we truly desire. Where is the wisdom in creating stress for ourselves and those around us and at the same time expending our efforts toward our hopes and dreams? And that is precisely what we will do if we rely upon others and circumstances to create pleasurable and healthy emotional states for ourselves!

Because, life rarely goes exactly as we desire, does it? Human beings are far from perfect, and we have not found a way yet to put ourselves in an environment where all is as we desire. So you might select a “well formed outcome,” then really go for it, and in the process of your journey, countless adjustments are called for! Others do not do as you would like for them to do, or perhaps the weather is not ideal for what you are going for. For instance, my daughter Jamie, who is in Spain studying for the semester had planned a weekend in the mountains recently and was very excited about her plans to being in the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains. However, the day before she was to head up the mountain, it snowed, and snowed, and snowed, and snowed, and snowed even more! The mountain peaks were inaccessible by car…and she made adjustments to her plans so she would enjoy her weekend. Now, how many people do you know who go off on vacation only to complain about this or that…because things do not match up to their expectations and demands?!

The Emotions of Life…

Are Up To You

Consider the millions upon millions of human beings who wake up on a regular basis to “face the day,” and do so with less than zest, vigor and passion for what they will be doing throughout the day.

Is life not too brief, and too precious to live that way? Is life not important enough for us to really learn, I mean really learn, how to create a rich and resourceful inner life, and a set of beliefs, values and behaviors that allow us to move through the day, the week, the month, so to speak, with a resourcefulness and flexibility to create the emotions we desire to experience, rather than being victims to circumstance or to other human beings?

Regarding “mastering emotions,” there are skills that we can learn, such as how to build what I call a “Foundation State,” which is quite easy and enjoyable to learn with some guidance, even over the phone. You can learn how to change certain beliefs through an exercise aptly called “The Belief Change Exercise!” Or you can learn how to easily, and yes I mean easily, respond “neutrally” to a past event that in the past was quite painful to you when you remembered it. When you learn how to use your brain in a different way, all of these things are quite easy. Curing phobias, eliminating stress, depression or anxiety. There will always be more than enough people telling us how hard it is to do what I have just described. They are locked into the same mindset of those who just knew that human flight via an aircraft was not possible, and that it would never be possible for sound to travel through wires, or that computers would never be small enough or affordable enough for the masses. So, believe what you will. As for me, I would rather follow someone who is doing what everyone else says cannot be done!

Helen Keller Illuminated The Way…

Can Anyone See?

Now, just how does one go about learning how to master emotions? I am reminded of Helen Keller who had the wisdom to accept help from another human being who cared about her. Helen Keller understood the value of a teacher to accelerate the learning process. Now, do you think that her teacher, Annie Sullivan, always taught her in a pleasant and comfortable manner? Or did she, at times, have to push her, and push her hard…to awaken her? Surely there were times of confusion, frustration, and more. I was not there, so all I can speak to is that in time Helen Keller became one of the greatest teachers to grace this planet. She learned how to master her emotions, her frustrations, her patterns of stopping short of what she was capable of, and she went on to literally create the emotional states and behaviors that would take her where she wanted to go.

What a brilliant woman! She did what few will ever decide to do, and that is to ensure a bright future for themselves by learning the tools, the strategies, the beliefs, the behaviors that would generate emotional states to fuel their hopes and dreams! I am reading my second book about Helen Keller now, entitled “Helen Keller, Rebellious Spirit.” She lived a remarkable life that was celebrated in books, articles, documentaries and photographs. She was the subject of an Academy Award-Winning film and a Broadway hit. Helen Keller met with every President from Grover Cleveland to John F. Kennedy. She counted among her friends famous individuals such as Mark Twain, Alexander Graham Bell and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Carl Sandburg once saw Helen Keller onstage in New York City in 1922 and wrote to her, saying, “Possibly the finest thing about your performance is that those who hear and see you feel that zest for living, the zest you radiate, is more important that any formula about how to live life.”

It seems that Helen Keller had a healthy spirit that rebelled against “normal.” She went against the grain and decided to master her emotions rather than allowing them to master her, as most do.

Now I do not know about you, of course, and how much, or even if you really desire to learn how to master your emotions. I do not know how much, or even if you desire to learn how to respond resourcefully to those around you even when it appears that they are communicating and behaving in quite an unhealthy manner. Perhaps you are that rare individual who is truly desiring to get your life on a whole new level by mastering emotions. If you are that rare individual, I extend an opportunity to you, an opportunity to let me know what is on your mind. You can reach me by e-mail at: alan@geniusdynamics.com . Electric Hand Dryers – Evolution and Recent Revolution

An inventor from Chicago, George Clemens, developed the first electric hand dryer back in 1948 and over the past sixty years has had little evolution in design save for a couple of advancements in sound suppression, motor efficiency and usability.

Essentially the design consists of a motor, fan, heating element, enclosure chassis and a button to switch it on. Relatively recent advancements to the design consist of an infra-red sensor to switch the dryer on with a timer to switch it off after a set number of seconds of use. The benefits of these small changes include: less risk of cross-contamination as there is no button to touch and the saving of energy as the unit will automatically switch off – it cannot be left running which was a problem with the old designs.

There have been many reports into the hygiene aspect of electric hand dryers – many suggest that because it takes so long to effectively dry your hands using one (on average up to 30 seconds) that many users leave with wet hands. This is a problem as bacteria can increase on wet hands over to 500% of an unwashed hand! To combat the problems of hygiene, time to dry and energy expenditure, several manufacturers have come up with new ingenious designs which claim remarkable results compared with the old warm air hand dryers – they are the new Jet Air Hand Dryers.

These new machines use the latest technology and some claim to dry your hands in less than TEN seconds. One product uses unheated air flowing at over 400mph to ’squeegee’ the water off your hands and another uses warm air flowing at 180mph to particulate and evaporate the water in next to no time!

The benefits of these advances are manifold: less time to dry means that more users will leave the washroom with dry hands stopping the risk of bacterial infection; less time means that less energy is consumed and are therefore more eco-friendly than the old warm air models and even disposable paper towels. The initial outlay for these types of machines is quite high compared to other forms of hand drying but over the life of the product the costs are much lower -to the finances and the environment.

As this new technology evolves in the coming years it may sound the death knell for the old warm air dryers and even the disposable paper towel dispensers. As costs come down, they get more eco-friendly and further hygiene measures are added these new machines will be ever-present in the washrooms of the future.

A Senior Moment – Dinner With 3-Time Olympian and American-Record Hammer Thrower Ed Burke

Almost every athlete who attends the annual U. S. National Track & Field Outdoors Masters Championships has had their day in the sun. Maybe it was in high school, college, or on the professional circuit, but almost all of these men and women have experienced success at some level of competition.

It is why more than 1,000 masters and senior runners returned to this year’s National Championships in Oshkosh (WI), to step back on the track or field once again and test themselves. To try and catch a firefly in a Mason jar on a hot summer night.

Ed Burke is one of those athletes. Burke was a standout at San Jose State University from 1960 to 1962, setting a school record with a throw of 192-feet-3.5-inches in 1962 that would stand for 16 years.

He competed for the United States in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and 1968 Mexico City Olympics, and then retired. After 12 years, he came out of retirement and failed to make the U. S. team that was boycotted from the 1980 Moscow Olympics. In 1984, at the age of 44, he made the team for the Los Angeles Olympics.

It had been 20 years since his first Olympic competition in Tokyo, and perhaps more important, Burke was selected by the U. S. team captains to carry the American flag during the opening ceremonies. It was truly an Olympic moment that Burke will never forget.

His personal record of 243-feet-11-inches was thrown at Stanford in 1984, and remains as the American record for the 40-44 age group.

After retiring a second time, Ed Burke is back at it again. In his first competition in 21 years, he threw the hammer 175-09, breaking the world and American records for the 65-69 age-group. Burke, now 69, won the hammer throw at this year’s National Track & Field Masters Championships in Wisconsin.

Burke is from Los Gatos, California. I flew from Lacey, Washington to Midway Airport in Chicago, was met by my best friend John Shaw of Davison, Michigan, and we drove to the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh for the meet. John and I have been friends for 49 years.

We both ran cross-country and track for Flint Central High School and Michigan State University. John is the former cross-country and track & field coach at Goodrich High School, where he experienced a lot of team success and produced some great college talent.

We blew into Oshkosh and, after cruising around a bit, pretty quickly determined that the best place for dinner the night before the meet was Fratellos Waterfront Restaurant on the scenic Fox River. With a microbrewery, boat dock, live music and outdoor dining, it was THE place to be in Oshkosh.

Having been born and raised in Michigan my first 21 years, it did not take me long to remember my Midwest roots. The people of Wisconsin were friendly, casual, confident and purely Midwest.

You remember the Midwest. It was the same place that gave us Mark Twain, Thomas Edison, John Wayne, Ernest Hemingway, Walt Disney, Abraham Lincoln, Warren Buffett, Paul Harvey, Charles Schultz, Carl Sandburg, James Dean, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Qunicy Jones, Ronald Reagan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Johnny Carson, the Wright Brothers, Benny Goodman and Bob Newhart. No wonder the Midwest is a special place; some call it the salt of the Earth.

We liked Fratellos so well we returned 4 consecutive nights for dinner. On the last night, we were chatting with our food server Jon, a recent University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh grad looking for a job, and Ed Burke strolled in alone. Burke overheard our conversation (turns out Jon was a runner in high school), and asked if he could join us.

We had never met Ed Burke before, but he was clearly a masters competitor, especially when you found out he threw the hammer, saw the size of his hands, and checked out the Olympic ring on his finger, which could have easily been mistaken for a Super Bowl ring.

Both John and I had a great time swapping war stories with Ed Burke. We talked a lot about the great San Jose State track coach “Bud” Winter, who coached Burke and earned San Jose State the nickname “Speed City”. Winter developed Olympic medalists and social activists Lee Evans, John Carlos and Tommie Smith. Carlos and Smith are perhaps best remembered for giving the raised fist salute from the medalist’s podium during the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

We also talked about how growing old is not fun, that getting into shape to compete and recovering from injury at our age takes so much more time. A high school athlete can get into great shape in 12 weeks; it takes us at least 12 months to achieve the same kind of progress.

As we talked and consumed more liquid refreshment, the sun began to set above the Fox River. John and I were celebrating his silver medal in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, but our after-dinner time spent with Ed Burke reminded us again just what the U. S. National Meet was really all about-camaraderie. You come for the competition and stay for the camaraderie.

How to Select a Refrigerator

Not knowing how a refrigerator works, how do you pick the ones that will work best for your operation? Manufacturers all have printed specifications, and your dealer or equipment consultant will have recommendations. Some of the criteria you’ll choose from follow. Finishes. The surface of your refrigerator should be as sturdy as its interior components. Popular finishes include stainless steel, vinyl-coated steel, fiberglass, and coated aluminum; the latter comes in rolled, stucco, or anodized styles. Unlike home models, there are not as many porcelain or baked-enamel finishes in the commercial world. In fact, some health departments do not allow these finishes in commercial or institutional installations.

Construction. You can’t kick the tires, but certain quality features will be evident, such as overall sturdiness, door alignment, and how securely the handle is attached to the appliance. All-metal, welded construction is a plus, and having a seamless interior. compartment is an NSF International requirement. In fact, the NSFI has a whole section on refrigeration, accepted by most cities as minimum standards. Also, look for ease of cleaning and self-defrost features. Insulation. The most commonly used type of insulation is polyurethane, in sheets or foam, which has superior insulation qualities and even makes the cabinet a bit sturdier. Make sure it is non-CFC polyurethane foam, with at least an R-15 rating.

Fiberglass is also acceptable, although it requires greater thickness to achieve the same results as the polyurethane. Doors. A small but critical detail is whether you want the door to open from the left or from the right side. There are also half doors (you conserve cooling power by only opening half the refrigerator at a time) or full-length doors; the doors can be solid or made of shatterproof glass; they can have hinges or slide open and shut on a track. The way doors are opened can impact traffic patterns in the kitchen (see Illustration 10-9). Doors can also be self-closing, with magnetic hardware, to prevent being left ajar accidentally. The hinges should be stainless steel or, at least, chrome. Look for door gaskets that are easy to snap in place, not the old screw-in kind, as you will probably be replacing them during the life of the unit.

Handles. Stainless steel or nickel-plated handles are best. You can select vertical or horizontal handles. They can protrude or be recessed. Be sure the handle is included in the warranty, since handles take a lot of abuse and may have to be replaced periodically. Refrigeration system. It may be self-contained or, in the case of very large appliances, a separate unit. As we’ve mentioned, it may also be top-mounted or bottommounted. The accurate electrical current and capacity of the facility must be known so the manufacturer can supply the correct voltage and phase to meet the needs of the space. In some cases, additional expense may be involved to upgrade the electrical system. At any rate, look for the UL seal of approval, a sign that the unit meets basic electrical safety standards. The system may be water cooled or air cooled. The most common in foodservice is the self-contained, air-cooled unit.

Remember, the capillary tube system is for refrigerators used for storage: not much door-opening action. The expansion valve system has quicker pull-down capacity-that is, it can pull the temperature down faster after the unit is opened. It is ideal for busy hot line situations where the refrigerator is constantly in use. Drain Requirements. Most new refrigerators provide an automatic defrost system and automatic condensate disposal, which eliminates the need for a separate plumbing connection. Ask about it, however. A reminder: The NSF sanitation standards prohibit drains inside the refrigerator. Accessory availability. You’ll get shelves as standard equipment with a refrigerator purchase. Make sure they are adjustable. For foodservice, there are lots of additional items that might improve efficiency: adjustable tray slides, drawers, special racks for serving pans (called pan glides or pan slides), and dollies or carts designed to convert a reach-in cabinet to a roll-in one.

Think about these accessories when selecting the door, too. Certain doors seem to work better with some types of add-ons. Warranty. Most manufacturers provide a one-year warranty on parts in case of defective workmanship or materials; look for a separate five-year warranty on the motor and compressor unit. Some manufacturers also offer extended service warranties. Cabinet capacity. A properly designed refrigerator should provide the maximum amount of usable refrigerated space per square foot of floor area, and must be able to accommodate the sizes of pans you’ll be using. There are plenty of complex guidelines for calculating capacity and needs, which will be covered elsewhere in this chapter. Adaptability. Because today’s foodservice operations have changing needs, manufacturers are building in features to maximize flexibility.

One such offering is the convertible temperature option. With a flick of a toggle switch, a freezer can be converted to a refrigerator. It can be a pricey addition at the time of purchase, but if food storage requirements change, the option will pay for itself instantly. Another variation is the combination medium-and-high-temperature cabinet, designed to thaw frozen products quickly and safely by introducing warmer air into the cabinet as needed.
